Introducing Basil

We hope you are prepared for the onslaught of cute that follows. You have been warned.

Monday afternoon we headed toward Gettysburg, PA (a quick 2 hour road trip) to meet and pick up our new puppy Basil. He is a 10 week old Black & Tan Shiba Inu that we purchased from Rodel Shibas, a show quality Shiba breeder. From the moment we saw this cutie, we were hooked.

So far, he has been extremely well behaved, slept through the night, let’s us know when he needs to go out, and wants nothing more than to play with Captain. They are still working out their boundaries but we have high hopes for them being best of friends. He is still getting use to his new collar and the general concept of a walk.  He thinks it’s walk/sit/run/sit.

Kate and I are so happy and excited to welcome this new addition into our hearts and home.

Without further adieu, Basil.

Being trained by a puppy,
Brett and Kate

Found it! (aka BUSTED)

Update to the missing car saga…

As it turns out, the car was stolen.  Just about 3 weeks into the 4 week wait period (30 day wait to get paid by the insurance company for a stolen car) I got a call from the police saying they found my call. They had picked it up 8 blocks away and caught the guy who had taken it. The guy was so smart that he was robbing local Rite Aid stores and then stayed in the area.  (*Note – my car, while a basic black SUV has Red White and Blue Illinois license plates – making it rather noticeable even from afar in the state of Pennsylvania).  The guy had smashed the passenger side window and then used a valet key (where he got this we don’t know) to get the car to run and make the robberies. My insurance (Progressive) picked the car up from the tow lot, had all the repairs made and less a week later, I had my car back.

In general, all the big things were fixed, but Kate and I continually ask ourselves what this guy was wearing because the seats are a little extra worn and there are little dings in the door panels; small enough that they aren’t noticeable at first glance.  The car runs just like it did before the incident and I have 100% faith in it. (I was nervous I wouldn’t trust the car after but that doesn’t seem to be the case)   My brother Chris and my Dad went and got me a car “club” to lock the steering wheel and also acts as a serious deterrent. THANKS GUYS!  So far so good.

Ill be taking the car this week to a professional detail shop to get it polished up inside and out (covered by insurance as well).

Not parking there anymore,

Brett and Kate

Review: Bar Ferdinand (the bull)

Over all, a very fun tapas restaurant in the piazza. During the summer, they have outdoor seating and make their paella right there for you to see and smell. They have some spectacular desserts like homemade churros with dark chocolate dipping sauce or caramel apple pie.

Unfortunately, we found the portions to be small and pricy, even for tapas. I recommend stopping by here for a mid-day snack or for an after dinner dessert and sangria.

Wait, where did I park my car?

Yup, it’s true. The city of brotherly love showed me its kind heart this past week.

I parked my car Wednesday evening and when I went to go pick up our friend from the airport Friday morning, my car was no where in sight.  The spot where I parked the car is on a street that has 10 ft brick walls on either side and its well known to not leave anything of value to the car – just in case.  Who thought they would just take the whole car?!

Called my insurance company Progressive to find out the steps to file a claim and then on to the police to file report it. First time I had to call 911. I think that was the most nerve racking part of the whole ordeal. Philly police sent a squad car over, he took all the info I had, checked to see if it was towed, and then we went for a ride around the neighborhood to see if it was anywhere.

As I hoped in the back of the police car (the back seat was hard plastic and anything but comfortable) and we drove around, sure enough I passed a couple neighbors who peeked in the back of the car and had a perplexed look as I smiled wide while we drove down the street.  Looking forward to telling that story when I meet up with the neighbors again.  Im sure the rumors are flying.

We did not find the car in the vicinity, so the cop wrote me an incident report and I had to file the official claim with the insurance company.  My agent stopped by to take a statement this morning and now we just wait; 30 days actually.  30 days from last friday and if the car doesn’t show up, they cut a check to my bank and I get to go find a new car.

The insurance covers a rental for the next 30 days so as of now, I am sporting a sweet Kia Omtima 2009.  (not the nice new one)

Im personally torn – while, I do miss my car and liked it very much (Subaru Forester 2010), Im not sure how I feel about getting it back if someone did take it. The other possibility is that it was towed and hasn’t been registered in the system yet.

We shall see what happens. Maybe a new car for my birthday.

Waiting patiently,

Brett and Kate

Google adds Recipe search

Woo hoo – Excited to try this out.  Searching for recipes is definitely a needle in a haystack task.

Recipe: White Bean Chicken Chili

We came across this recipe for white bean chicken chili here: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/white-bean-chicken-chili/

White Bean Chicken Chili

Usually chilies can involve a lot of prep and a long time (4-8 hours) of cooking in a slow cooker. Not this one.  The most difficult task was opening all the cans.

1 large pot (We used a 2.5 qt cast iron)
14.5 oz of Chicken broth
2 cans of diced tomatoes (1 drained / 1 not)  (the recipe called for 1 can tomatillos and 1 can tomatoes but we couldn’t find the tomatillos)
1 can sweet corn (drained)
1 can white beans (drained and rinsed)
1 (7 ounce) can diced green chiles (drained)
1 large onion
2 cloves garlic
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander seed (I left this out)
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1 lbs cooked chopped chicken
2 TBS oil

In the large pot – sweat the onions garlic and oil.  Low heat and patience is best for this. Don’t let the garlic stick or burn.  Once the onions turn slightly translucent add the chicken broth, tomatoes, chiles, and seasonings; bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes.   We quickly grilled the chicken on the Foreman grill.

After 10 minutes,  chop and add the chicken, beans and corn. Salt and pepper to taste. Stir and simmer for 5 more minutes.

Server with a crusty bread and you can top with sour cream and cheese.

We were very surprised and happy with both the taste (just enough zing) and the simplicity and time it took to make this.  Definitely adding to the winter rotation.

Our First ‘Mostly-Jewish’ Wedding

Aren't they stunning? (courtesy of Aaron Morgenstein photography)

November 13th marked the very special occasion of my cousin Cheryl’s wedding to the most perfect guy for her (Ben) which means we got to spend a weekend in Chicago with all the amazing people we call friends…and some family of course :) The wedding was absolutely beautiful, held at the South Shore Cultural Center where decorations are hardly necessary against the architecture, and it was really neat to be part of a ceremony that was so unique and personal to the couple (I was fortunate enough to perform a reading). We got to see some Jewish wedding traditions for the first time, as well as some Cheryl & Ben twists (e.g. the unity chemical reaction). Following the wedding was a short cocktail hour, and then came the reception where we pretty much all danced ’til we dropped…and props to Grandma Mo who outlasted all of us younger folk! It was a total blast & we were so happy to be a part of it.

Also, a huge, gigantic, enormous thank you to all our friends who made it out to brunch on Sunday…and a special thanks to Mark for letting us crash at his pad. It was so lovely to see you all…we terribly miss your wonderful faces & were so happy to get to see them!

Wishing the newlyweds all the best,

Ridley Creek Park Hike

This past weekend Kate and I found another stellar hike – Ridley Creek State Park. They offer a total of 12 miles worth of trails – 4 hiking and 1 paved multi-use trail where bikes are allowed.

After decyphering the directions (or lack thereof) we found our way into the park and picked a trail. We settled on the white trail which looked to be the best loop for a first hike (ended up being 5.4 miles which was nice). The other hiking trails were either not loops or very short, so we may go back and combine some of them next time. The white trail was a moderate grade hike with constant rises and drops in elevation but nothing overwhelming. More-so, we are definitely looking forward to returning to check out the multi-use trail with our bikes.

And since our geekiness follows us everywhere we go :) you can see our path and stats here:

If you ever get a letter or maybe even a package from my parents, be sure to take a look at the stamps.  There might be 1 or more likely 5. It might be christmas in august. It might be Mickey next to Elvis.  Thanks Mom and Dad.

We love getting mail,
Brett and Kate.
